WHEN YOU THINK OF A HOMELESS PERSON, WHAT PICTURE POPS INTO YOUR HEAD?
WHEN YOU THINK OF A HOMELESS PERSON, WHAT PICTURE POPS INTO YOUR HEAD?
Do you picture the man sitting under the Arts Garden downtown shaking a cup at you? Do you think of a man holding a cardboard sign at the bottom of an exit ramp off of 465 asking for work? What about the man holding the sign that says,”Why lie? It’s for beer?”
How often, though, do you think of the woman walking down the street with her children in tow with no where to go and no idea as to how she will feed them? How often do you notice the teenager with a backpack trying to slyly dig through the trash for something to eat, only to find a two day old sandwhich that he eats anyway?
Homelessness doesn’t just affect one kind of person. Homelessness can affect ANY person. In Indianapolis alone, 1500 children (under 18) spent at least one night on the streets last year. 1500 children! That’s the equivalent of more than two classes of North Central High School graduates not having anywhere to go after school. And the average age of a homeless person in Indianapolis is only 9! Nine years old… That just makes me sick to my stomach.
It was extremely hard for me to ignore these statistics–That’s why I chose to get involved with the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army programs meet the needs of our homeless neighbors every day of the year, and their Homelessness Bites Campaign is your way to get involved. I sincerely hope you will help me bite back against homelessness. It’s not as much work as you would think, and there are multiple ways to help.
